  • Event Description:

Did you know that 22 of the top 25 grossing films of all-time are science fiction or fantasy films? If you add Finding Nemo then that number is 23 out of 25. Science Fiction is THE genre of the new millennium, and Boston hosts the oldest (we think) genre film festival in the country, maybe the world. It's the 38th Boston Science Fiction Film Festival Feb 8 - 18, 2013 at the Somerville Theatre in Davis Square. The Festival is broken into two parts - The Fest and The 'Thon. The Fest, short for festival, kicks off everything. It features international premieres and emerging American directors, special engagements, visiting guests, mind blowing shorts and the occasional documentary. There are as many as five different shows every day.The 'Thon closes out the entire festival. It's a 24 hour non-stop orgy of film. It starts on Sunday Feb 17 at noon and runs through until  noon the following day. People from all over the country attend bringing their ray guns, sleeping bags and sense of adventure. In between squeezing eye drops into blood shot eyes, they'll warble at the Alien Mating Cry Contest, prevent alien mind melds with the Aluminum Foil Hat Contest or test their sci-fi trivia knowledge with the Milky Way Minutiae Contest.Yet it is more than a collection of films to watch, the 38th Boston Science Fiction Film Festival is a community, a community of friendly nerds, charming geeks and curious conversations. The cost for the Festival is $100 which includes The 'Thon or The 'Thon by itself for $50. These discounted prices are valid until January 1, 2013.Want to find out more?
